Former Colts first round pick keeps spiraling downward

Back in 2012 when Chuck Pagano and Ryan Grigson formed the regime in town, they had a lot of work to do. They started with taking Andrew Luck with the first overall pick in 2012.

That pick was a no-brainer, but even after a season in which Luck helped lead them to the playoffs there was still a lot of work to be done.

Grigson and Pagano elected to start on the defense in 2013, and with the 24th overall pick they selected Bjoern Werner, the defensive end from Florida State. At the time the move seemed to be a head scratcher, because while at Florida State, Werner was a down lineman and the Colts would need to switch him to a outside 3-4 linebacker.

That would take time. A lot of time. But Werner never flashed any real athletic ability to make the move.

During his three seasons with the Colts, Werner tailed just 6.5 sacks, a far cry from what the team brought him in for. At one point during the 2014 season, Werner was benched for fifth round pick Jonathan Newsome ( who is no longer on the team).

The Colts parted ways with Werner in March, and in May the former first round pick was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, Werner will never play a down with the Jags.

Werner is now at a road block in his career. He likely has one more stop to make it work before the word bust starts getting thrown around.

But ask any Colts fan right now, and they will tell you. That label is already there.
