Former Colbert County High Principal appeals firing

COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Former Colbert County Principal Melcha Satchel has appealed his recent firing by the Colbert County Board of Education, the board’s attorney tells News 19.

Board Attorney Jon McGee said Thursday that Satchel has chosen to appeal after he was fired earlier this month. Satchel’s contract was canceled on May 10 after an extended board meeting discussing accusations against the former principal.

McGee clarified Thursday that the board chose to cancel Satchel’s contract for violations of board policy and failure to create an action plan to address Colbert County High School’s state report card.

The board attorney said Satchel violated board policy by sending a student to an alternative school program without notifying the Superintendent or school board.

“That denies the student their right to due process before the board,” McGee said.

Previously, McGee told News 19 that if Satchel did appeal the decision the matter would go to the Colbert County Circuit Court.

McGee said there was a hearing on Thursday to discuss scheduling with the court, and an appeal hearing was set for June 24.
