Former Clarksville police officer charged with child sexual exploitation

A former Clarksville police officer was arrested Thursday on multiple charges of child sexual exploitation.

Mike Tobin allegedly showed a minor under the age of 18 sexually explicit images and videos which were evidence in a pending criminal case, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The minor reported the abuse to the Butler County Sheriff's office on March 4, according to the release. Some of the images allegedly shown were nude images of minors, the release said.

The release stated Tobin's employment with the Clarksville Police Department was terminated on March 5.

The Clarksville City Council previously voted to fire Tobin on April 1, but later rescinded their termination and accepted his resignation, dating back to March 5, multiple news outlets reported at the time.

Tobin was arrested Thursday and faces three felony charges for sexual exploitation of a minor and eight aggravated misdemeanor charges for sexual exploitation of a minor, according to court documents.

Court documents show Tobin was unemployed at the time of his arrest and is seeking counsel assistance from the state.

An investigation conducted with assistance from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations has been forwarded to the Butler County Attorney's Office for review, according to the release.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Butler County Attorney's Office did not respond to immediate requests for comment.
