Former Arlington Martin coach joins TCU’s staff as director of high school relations

Former Arlington Martin head coach Bob Wager is joining TCU football’s staff as a director of high school relations, TCU Football announced Thursday.

Wager was hired as a tight end coach and special teams assistant at Nebraska, and was set to coach under Matt Rhule. Wager, on July 28, 2023, resigned from the position following a citation for a driving offense.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Wager was cited for a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or higher -- which is double the legal limit -- refusing a a breath test and having an open container.

“To Coach Rhule and Athletic Director Trev Alberts: It is with great remorse that I resign from my position as assistant football coach at the University of Nebraska,” Wager wrote in a statement on July 28, 2023. “Earlier this week I received a citation for a driving offense that I regret immensely. I am grateful for the opportunity extended to me, and sincerely sorry for any negativity my poor decision has brought to my family, our team, our staff, and all those that I have disappointed.”

Wager is back in the Fort Worth-area football scene 230 days after his resignation at Nebraska, and will work in an environment he is extremely familiar with.

Wager, who was hired at Martin in 2006, spent 17 seasons at with the Warriors, leading the program to high school football greatness. Martin made the postseason in every season with Wager at the helm, winning seven undefeated district championships.

Wager claimed 11 bi-district championships with the Warriors and also coached the team to a regional final.

Prior to his stint at Martin, Wager coached three years at Tolar, one year at Kaufman and three years at Groveton. Wager, a board member of the Texas High School Coaches Association from 2016 to 2021, led Tolar to its first win in program history, and went in the tally a 206-100 career record.

Wager, while at Martin, coached NFL superstar and current Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, who was picked No. 1 in the 2017 draft following two season with Texas A&M.
