In Touch Weekly reports that Sanjaya Malakar, who competed on Season 6 of "Idol," was spotted singing in the subway for donations.

A source tells the magazine, "He was singing '(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay'" at the First Avenue L Station.

During his time on "Idol," Malakar was a lightning rod for controversy. He generated the most buzz and Internet searches of all the contestants on his season, but the judges criticized his singing. Simon Cowell even said he'd quit the show if Malakar won. Still, he had the support of fans like Ashley Ferl, "the Crying Girl," who wept over his performances.

After "Idol," he competed on Season 2 of "I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here," then dabbled in various music projects. Last year, he told the Daily Beast he was working on a self-produced album.

In the subway, Malakar, accompanied by a guitarist, accounted well for himself, says the eyewitness."The guy's still a decent singer!"

At least good enough to get some cash in that guitar case!
