What’s the forecast for Padres opening weekend?
SAN DIEGO — Our boys of summer return for the 2024 MLB regular season at Petco Park and while the first two games feature fair and dry weather, a spring storm system may put a damper on the second half of the series.
The San Diego Padres are back in action for opening weekend with a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants starting Thursday at Petco Park. All eyes will be on the weekend forecast as rain, wind and possible thunderstorms could threaten a delay of game or a rare rainout.
Weather for opening day Thursday and for Friday looks fair and mild with temperatures topping out in the mid 60s. Winds will come into play on both days as we transition into stronger onshore flow ahead of the weekend storm system. Expect a return of the marine layer each evening near the ballpark.
Petco Park: What’s new to see this season
Timing of the rain looks to begin Saturday morning with heavier rain forecasted for Saturday afternoon and evening. Once we get into the rain, it’ll likely be widespread rain for a few hours with pockets of downpour.
A few on and off showers are expected Sunday as the core of the system hangs out over Southern California, so rain won’t be as consistent, but there are chances for thunderstorms that day.
Between Saturday and Monday, San Diego coastal areas, including downtown, could pick up one to two inches of rain.
