Today at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, Ford pulled the wraps off a new Mustang Cobra Jet dragster. It honors the 50th anniversary of the original Cobra Jet with horsepower and speed. It's an appropriate tribute.

Built by Ford Performance, the new Cobra Jet is capable of quarter-mile times in the mid-eight-second range, trapping at around 150 mph. Ford says that makes this the "fastest production Mustang on the drag strip." A horsepower figure hasn't been released yet, but with a bored-out 5.2-liter version of Ford's Coyote V8 and a huge 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger, the number is probably somewhere in the vicinity of "a lot." A Ford spokesperson told us an exact horsepower figure will come later this year.

The Cobra Jet is also equipped with a nine-inch solid rear axle, height-adjustable coilovers, an NHRA-certified roll cage and FIA-certified racing seats. Oh, and of course, a wheelie bar and parachute. No, this thing ain't street legal.

Ford will only build a limited run of 68 new Cobra Jets, at a price of $130,000. Ordering is open now. You only get two color choices, Race Red or Oxford White, while the graphics package seen here is optional. We think it should be mandatory.
