Ford's Fiesta and Focus ST models have been such a big success worldwide it was only ever going to be a matter of time before other ST models were introduced, and the Blue Oval has now revealed that a Ford Edge ST will be the next model to wear the performance garb.
The Edge is the first Ford SUV to get a performance-focused ST model, which will be part of a refreshed Edge lineup that will be on display at the Detroit auto show next week. Because the Edge already has the Sport model in its ranks, the Edge ST won't be quite as dramatic a step up in performance as the ST models in the Focus and Fiesta ranges are.
Under the hood of the Edge ST will be the same 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 that's already in the Edge Sport, but in the ST it will be tuned to develop 20 horsepower and 30 lb.-ft. more torque that it does in the Edge Sport. That means it will be putting out a total of 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, which isn't to be sniffed at. Like the Sport, the Edge ST will also be standard all-wheel drive, but like the rest of the refreshed lineup the ST will come with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. But in the ST the transmission will also get paddle shifters and a Sport mode that alters shift points.
As well as the retuned engine and the badging, the Edge ST will also boast a mesh grille, deeper side skirts, a set of ST-exclusive 21-inch wheels, and extra bolstered seats with an ST badge on them that also appears on the steering wheel.
The 2019 Ford Edge ST will also feature a whole host of advanced safety technology, and along with the rest of the refreshed lineup it will be appearing in showrooms from the summer of this year.
