No 23-year-old expects to hear they might have cancer. Food Network star Skyler Bouchard was understandably shocked to find out she needed to undergo surgery to remove a 5-centimeter tumor on her breast. Luckily, the tumor was benign, but the experience has made her rethink her health and concept of beauty.

In a post on her Instagram, Bouchard-who hosts "Sipping With Skyler" on Food Network's Snapchat-called the past few weeks a "whirlwind" as she came to terms with the need for surgery, and what it might do to her body.

"I've learned so much about how body image and self acceptance can be changed in an instant," Bouchard wrote in the post. She said she worked hard to "practice 100% body positivity and build 'unbreakable' self confidence." That positivity took a dive when she found out she had to go under the knife, though ultimately the food writer says she realized her luck in that she did not have cancer.

" I have to pinch my arm to remind myself that I am not going through a crisis," she wrote. "Cancer is a crisis. This makes me insecure and scared, but it's not a crisis."

Despite her brave outlook, she still has every right to be concerned-according to the American Cancer Society, benign breast conditions are not life-threatening, but can be linked to a higher risk of breast cancer later on.

Snaps to Bouchard for being honest and open about her feelings toward surgery and what it means for her self-image, and for keeping her sense of humor during a scary time.

Refinery29 spoke to Bouchard after her surgery Friday and reported it went "exceptionally well."
