Foo Fighters and Rick Astley ‘rick roll’ fans with surprise festival collaboration

Foo Fighters trolled their own fans when they invited Rick Astley on stage for an impromptu grunge version of the pop icon’s hit song, Never Gonna Give You Up.

The US band were playing Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo when they surprised fans by bringing out their “new best friend”.

Frontman Dave Grohl told the crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen will you please welcome our new best friend, Rick Astley.

“This is f****** crazy I just met him two minutes ago.”

The band merged Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit with Astley’s 1987 hit as the pop star took charge of the microphone and shouted: “Come on you mother******.”

Clearly having the best time on stage, Astley kept telling the crowd that he felt “f****** marvellous” as he belted out the song.

On wrapping up his performance, he hugged Grohl and told the band: “F****** nuts. You're nuts.”

It’s not the first time the band have pulled off a “rick roll” – which started out as an internet prank which saw users click a link that would take them to the music video for Astley’s hit song.

In 2015 they rick rolled the Westboro Baptist Church by driving up to the group who were protesting the band's Kansas City concert with Never Gonna Give You Up blaring out of some speakers.
