According to a release from the city, four new sidewalk projects are planned to help connect existing walkways. This comes after the city council voted on Monday, April 15, to approve the project funding.

“We have existing sidewalks that are unconnected,” Foley Executive Director for Infrastructure and Development Wayne Dyess said. “These projects will then connect these, building a complete network, so we’re getting more bang for our buck.”

The following projects are planned to help improve access to Foley High School, Mathis Elementary School, Foley Elementary School and Alabama 59.

  • The Foley Elementary Sidewalk will extend along North Cedar Street in front of the campus, the release said.

  • The Foley High Walkway would be built on South Pine Street near Pride Drive.

  • The Mathis Sidewalk is planned to be constructed along South Cedar Street. It will join with walkways already built on Ninth Avenue, which officials said will provide pedestrian access to Hickory Street.

  • The Alabama 59 Walkway will be on the east side of the highway, extending south from East Verbena Avenue. According to the release, the walkway will connect the walkway that ends at the Portabella’s restaurant and extend the walkway south.

Additional projects are also planned, the release said.

These projects are all a part of a program approved by the Foley City Council that will provide $1 million to build new sidewalks around the city this fiscal year.
