Indian insurance startup Go Digit raises $141M from anchor investors ahead of IPO
Go Digit, an Indian insurance startup, has raised $141 million from dozens of investors as part of an initial public offering that starts on Wednesday. Fidelity, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Bay Pond, Mirae Asset Management, Steadview Capital, and HSBC, as well as Indian mutual funds operated by SBI, ICICI, Axis, Tata and Edelweiss served as anchor backers for the IPO, Go Digit disclosed in a filing to the stock exchange.

Google launches Firebase Genkit, a new open source framework for building AI-powered apps
At the Google I/O developer conference on Tuesday, Google announced an addition to its Firebase platform that aims to make it easier for developers to build AI-powered applications in JavaScript/TypeScript, with Go support coming soon. Firebase Genkit is an open source framework, using the Apache 2.0 license, that enables developers to quickly build AI into new and existing applications. "Powerful large language models put AI-powered app features within reach, but building and refining these features beyond a prototype is hard," Google product manager Chris Gill and developer advocate Peter Friese wrote in Tuesday's announcement.

LearnLM is Google's new family of AI models for education
Google says it has developed a new family of generative AI models "fine-tuned" for learning: LearnLM. A collaboration between Google's DeepMind AI research division and Google Research, LearnLM models — built on top of Google's Gemini models — are designed to "conversationally" tutor students on a range of subjects, Google says. LearnLM is already powering features across Google products, including in YouTube, Google's Gemini apps, Google Search and Google Classroom.

Mobile app developers, including Patreon and Grammarly, are already integrating with Gemini Nano, its smallest AI model, the company announced during the Google I/O 2024 developer keynote on Tuesday. The companies, along with other select developers, were invited to work with Gemini Nano through an early access program announced last year, the company said. In the coming months, Google says it will open up the Gemini Nano model to more developers.

Reddit announced on Tuesday the launch of five new tools for AMA (Ask Me Anything), its Q&A feature where celebrities, public figures, organizations and Redditors engage with community members and provide answers about a certain topic. As part of the update, Reddit also launched a dedicated AMA tab within the web post composer. This tab allows users to create an AMA session the same way they would a regular post.

The summaries are created based on Gemini's analysis of insights from Google Maps’ community of more than 300 million contributors. Google Veo, a serious swing at AI-generated video, debuts at Google I/O 2024
Google’s gunning for OpenAI’s Sora with Veo, an AI model that can create 1080p video clips around a minute long given a text prompt. Unveiled on Tuesday at Google’s I/O 2024 developer conference, Veo can capture different visual and cinematic styles, including shots of landscapes and time lapses, and make edits and adjustments to already generated footage. “We’re exploring features like storyboarding and generating longer scenes to see what Veo can do,” Demis Hassabis, head of Google’s AI R&D lab DeepMind, told reporters during a virtual roundtable.
