Focus shifts to Europe's economy as prime minister winds up London trip

LONDON - Prime Minister Stephen Harper started his day meeting the Queen, then turned his focus to Europe's debt problems.

He'll meet business leaders later today in London before leaving for Paris to meet French President Francois Hollande on Thursday.

If his recent CBC and Financial Times interviews are any indication, Europe's debt crisis will be top of mind when he meets the country's new president.

Harper told CBC's The National time is running out to cure what ails the European economy.

The prime minister conceded he has been worried for some time about Europe's financial future.

Harper says there's still time to find a long-term solution, but warns the world can't constantly be dealing with Europe's short-term problems.

On Wednesday, the European Central Bank opted not to change its benchmark interest rate as it tries to prod eurozone governments to take stronger action to tackle their debt crisis.

The bank is under pressure to stimulate a weakening eurozone economy with a rate cut. But bank president Mario Draghi has said the central bank cannot make up for inaction by governments.
