FNF Smooth Team of the Year: Riverside Academy

RESERVE, La. (WGNO) — The Riverside Academy Rebels were stellar in 2023. The Rebels and head coach Lee Roussel reached the championship game in Division IV Select. Along the way, the Rebs routed top seed Vermillion Catholic on their home field in the state semifinals. At the Smooth Team of the Year ceremony, players and coaches were treated to T-shirts and delicious smoothies from Smoothie King.

“I knew this place had a rich tradition and winning, and so does all River Parish football, but yes, I knew that with the right people and the right coaching staff. I know that there’s talent in the River Parish. I didn’t know year two that we get to the dome, but you take it. Yes, I did have this in mind,” Coach Roussel said when asked about his vision when taking over the Rebels’ program.

With a talented young team, Roussel also feels that consistent excellence at Riverside is certainly possible.

“The best days ahead; and the best is yet to come; and I really like our young guys. It only gets better. You look all the way down to our fifth and sixth grade teams. I think there’s some special kids down there that they got a taste of it, and they saw these old guys and these seniors get there. Yes, I think the next step is not only to get back, but yeah, you wanna win one,” Roussel continued.

When Lee Roussel arrived, the football team numbered 37. Not anymore.

“Being a 1A football team and possibly having over 60 kids on your team, that’s just a testament to what our coaching staff has done, not only in the back as far as football, but in the hallways,” the Rebels’ head coach added.

Roussel thanks Smoothie King and Friday Night Football. They and Riverside Football are Friday night traditions.

“We appreciate Smoothie King and we appreciate you guys for doing what you do.”
