Killers of the Flower Moon star condemns Yellowstone's Western depiction

Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone has condemned Yellowstone's glorification of the American West, deeming it "deplorable".

Asked about Taylor Sheridan's much-lauded series led by Kevin Costner and its spinoffs 1883 and 1923, the Native actress spoke candidly.

"Delusional! Deplorable!" she told Vulture about the Western depictions in the Yellowstone universe.

Gladstone then clarified that she didn't mean to criticise the Native actors who are part of the Yellowstone cast, which includes Native stars Gil Birmingham, Moses Brings Plenty and Q'orianka Kilcher, among others.

"No offence to the Native talent in that," Gladstone said, revealing: "I auditioned several times. That's what we had."

The First Cow actress is part of the ensemble for Martin Scorsese's hotly-anticipated Western crime drama, also starring Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in lead roles, as well as Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow and Brendan Fraser.

In her interview, Gladstone touched upon working with the famed director, explaining how Killers of the Flower Moon, which focuses on the murders of Osage tribe members in 1920s Oklahoma, was made in close collaboration with the Osage Nation community.

"The work is better when you let the world inform the work," she said, adding that Killers won't be "a white saviour story".

"That was very refreshing how involved the production got with the [Osage Nation] community. As the community warmed up to our presence, the more the community got involved with the film," she continued.

"It's a different movie than the one [Scorsese] walked in to make almost entirely because of what the community had to say about how it was being made and what was being portrayed."

Killers of the Flower Moon will arrive in UK cinemas on October 20.
