Florida Woman Sports Ear-to-Ear Grin After She's Arrested for DUI After Fatal Crash
A Florida woman smiled from ear-to-ear in a mugshot taken after she allegedly caused a car crash while driving drunk that killed a woman, authorities said.
Angenette Welk, 44, rear-ended a Hyundai Elantra, forcing it under a horse trailer in Marion County, authorities said. Inside the Hyundai were Shiyanne Kroll, 18, and her 60-year-old mother, Sandra Clarkson, who was critically injured and died days later after being removed from life support at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
State troopers arrested Welk at the scene. Her blood alcohol content was .172, more than twice the legal driving limit, authorities said.
Clarkson had come to Marion County to attend her daughter's college graduation. Welk told authorities she had dropped her phone, and bent to retrieve it. When she sat up, she saw she was about to collide with the Hyundai, officials said.
She faces charges including DUI with great bodily harm, authorities said. She has pleaded not guilty and is free on $10,000 bail. The Florida Highway Patrol is working with prosecutors to enhance the charges to DUI manslaughter, authorities said.
Her mugshot "disgusts me and that means she has no remorse for what she did at all and I hope that judge sees that picture and says the same thing," said Kroll, Clarkson's daughter.
Her mother's death has "wrecked our family forever, not just temporarily," Kroll said.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help pay for Clarkson's funeral expenses.
