Florida State's Matthew Thomas loses pick-six by mistiming slide into end zone
If you’re one of the few people that decided to willingly watch Florida and Florida State play on Saturday, you’re a hero. Though we’re guessing you were probably watching just to see what stupid things would happen.
And Florida State linebacker Matthew Thomas did a stupid thing in the second half.
Thomas did a good thing by picking off Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks. As he waltzed towards the end zone with no Florida player in sight, Thomas decided to do a dive-slide hybrid into the end zone.
He didn’t cross the goal line before his knee hit the turf. Watch.
Thomas was initially credited with a score, but the play was immediately reviewed and overturned to give Florida State the ball at the 1.
But wait, there’s more! Thomas got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after he “scored” the touchdown. And even though the touchdown didn’t count, the penalty still does. So Florida STate was penalized 15 yards from the 1 and took over at the 16.
Thankfully for Thomas, the Seminoles ended up scoring on that offensive drive. So he didn’t cost his team seven points. But he did make the offense do what he should have easily done himself.
