Florida mother arrested after daycare finds gun inside 2-year-old son’s lunchbox

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida mother was arrested last week after her 2-year-old son’s daycare found a gun inside his lunchbox.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by NBC affiliate WPTV, the incident occurred on March 14 just before noon at Jackson’s Daycare Center located at 1232 W 31st Street in Riviera Beach.

WTPV said police were called to the daycare after a teacher found the weapon inside the child’s lunchbox.

The boy’s mother, 39-year-old Shanae Davis, told authorities that she normally leaves the gun, a Glock 43, inside her glove box. However, Davis told police that there had been break-ins at her apartment complex recently, so she’d been taking the firearm out of her car.

Davis said while she was getting her 2-year-old ready for school Thursday morning, she put her gun inside his lunchbox because she “doesn’t carry a purse and did not want it to be in the open.”

The mother told police that she’d forgotten to take the gun out of the boy’s lunchbox, the affidavit states. After the gun was found, the daycare called Davis and told her to come to the center immediately.

According to WPTV, the 39-year-old is facing charges, including allowing a minor to obtain a firearm and take it to school and child neglect.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office jail records show that the mother was released from custody on March 15.
