Florida emergency rule lists exceptions for 6-week abortion ban

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida’s 6-week abortion ban left reproductive health doctors and their patients reeling with questions about how women with certain life-threatening conditions, like ectopic pregnancy, should be treated.

The new rules clarify which medical conditions qualify for exceptions under the law, which went into effect Wednesday.

“The Agency finds there is an immediate danger to the health, safety, and welfare of pregnant women and babies due to a deeply dishonest scare campaign and disinformation being perpetuated by the media, the Biden Administration, and advocacy groups to misrepresent the Heartbeat Protection Act and the State’s efforts to protect life, moms, and families,” the Agency for Healthcare Administration wrote in the rule.

Treatment of ectopic pregnancies, trophoblastic tumors, and inducing an early delivery after the mother’s water broke are not considered abortions, the agency clarified.
