FAA lifts ground stops at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark airports amid NY storm

NEW YORK (PIX11) — The FAA issued ground stops at JFK, Newark International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport on Thursday after a severe thunderstorm moved through the tri-state area.

All of the ground stops were lifted by 12 p.m., according to the FAA. Flights at all three airports were still experiencing delays of up to nearly two hours. Flights were initially grounded around 9:30 a.m.

New York City forecast and PIX11’s Weather Center

LaGuardia continued to have a ground delay of about 97 minutes Thursday afternoon, according to the FAA.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning throughout New York City and the surrounding areas until 10:45 a.m. Heavy downpours hit around 10 a.m. Officials also warned of the potential for hail and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour.

In Lower Manhattan, one person was injured when lightning struck a building, according to the FDNY and NYPD. The building on Pine Street, near Water Street, was struck just after 10 a.m., officials said.

One person was taken to a hospital, but their condition was not immediately known.
