United went on to say: “We provided hotel accommodations for customers and arranged for a new aircraft to take them to their destination on Monday.”

There were 10 crew members on board, according to United.

According to FlightAware.com, the flight departed Zurich at 9:46 a.m. and was diverted to Shannon after about five hours. The flight to Chicago would have been just under 10 hours.

“Flight crews are trained to recognize and respond to lithium battery fires in the cabin. Passengers should notify flight crew immediately if their lithium battery or device is overheating, expanding, smoking or burning,” according to the FAA website.

Lithium-ion and metal batteries must also be carried with passengers in the plane cabins only and can not be checked in luggage, according to the FAA.
