"Phoebe has a lifelong love affair with Lara Croft and as soon and very soon we'll start the worldwide search for who will play this iconic role and I just can't wait," said Amazon MGM Studios chief Jennifer Salke at the event.

In a statement released shortly after the show's announcement, Waller-Bridge also shared her excitement, saying: "If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she'd explode.

"Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure. Bats 'n all."

The first entry in the video game franchise was created in 1996, with over 95 million copies sold worldwide by 2022.

Lara Croft has been voiced by a number of famous faces over the years, including Grey's Anatomy star Camilla Luddington and Line of Duty's Keeley Hawes.

The games were later adapted as films starring Angelina Jolie and then Alicia Vikander, who had been expected to get a sequel following the 2018 release of Tomb Raider — only for it to be suddenly cancelled in July 2022.

Meanwhile, Waller-Bridge can currently be seen in John Krasinski's new fantasy movie IF, which follows a young girl and her neighbour (Ryan Reynolds) who have the ability to see abandoned imaginary friends.

Tomb Raider doesn't have a release date yet.
