Flashes of St Elmo's Fire Seen From Cockpit of RAF Plane

The Royal Air Force’s 99 Squadron has released a video showing the phenomenon known as St Elmo’s Fire developing at the nose of a C-17 Globemaster plane during a recent nighttime flight near the equator.

According to the Scientific American, St Elmo’s Fire is “a type of continuous electric spark called a glow discharge” which can appear “when high electrical voltage affects a gas.”

For a plane, the RAF said, “it usually means you’re surrounded by storms.” Credit: 99 Squadron RAF via Storyful
