‘The Flash’ nixes speedster villain in season 4
The Flash is going to be shaking things up in season 4!
Though The CW super series has featured a speedster villain each season — Reverse-Flash, Zoom, and Savitar — that won’t be the case moving forward.
“Next season we’re not going to have a speedster ,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said at PaleyFest on Saturday, where the casts of Arrow, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash gathered to spill scoop on their respective series.
For now, the mystery plaguing Team Flash is the identity of Savitar. The all-powerful speedster claims to be a god, but that was proven untrue when Jesse Quick (Violett Beane) was able to wound him. “With Savitar, we know who he is under there,” Kreisberg says. “We’ve been planning this for a while and we’re really excited about it.”
They may get help in that regard with the upcoming introduction of Abra Kadabra (David Dastmalchian). “Episode 18 has Abra Kadabra, who is also a villain from the future,” Kreisberg says. “He knows who Savitar is and comes with a moral conundrum: Do Barry and the team let Abra Kadabra go in order to get Savitar’s identity? It’s a great mortality play. Iris and Barry have a great scene, ‘Can you be a hero if you do one bad thing?'”
In order to gain more information on Savitar, Barry will subsequently go to the future during episode 19, which is called “The Once and Future Flash,” which is the title of a 1993 issue of the comics. “Barry decides that the only way he can find out what he needs to know is in the future,” Kreisberg says.
In the meantime, Barry’s (Grant Gustin) attention will turn away from the big bad during Tuesday’s episode as the Scarlet Speedster gets trapped in a ’40s send-up alongside Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) — both of whom are facing personal issues in their respective love lives.

“The person who did those episodes the best were Joss Whedon,” Kreisberg says of “gimmick” hours. “They didn’t stop the main ongoing narrative of the season… those episodes really spoke to what the characters were going through. We set it up on both Supergirl and Flash that Barry and Kara would be at romantic crossroads so when they go into the musical episode, they’re both in the same place, so they go on this journey together to get back what they think they’ve lost or not.”
Speaking of crossovers, Kreisberg reiterated what he recently told press: “We’re going to try to do a real, true four-way crossover with all four shows,” therefore including Supergirl as well, rather than just being on The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. Stephen Amell says he asked CW chief Mark Pedowitz if they’d do a big crossover event every year, and the actor says he responded in the affirmative. “You’re f—ing right we are.”
During the panel, Amell also answered a fan question in regards to whether Oliver and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) would ever get back together. “That’s not really up to me,” he said. “But I will say that they have some really, really cool stuff coming up.”
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET, The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET and Arrow airs Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
