Flames hire Burke to front-office position

The Calgary Flames announced Thursday that they hired Brian Burke to the newly created position of directory of hockey operations.

General manager Jay Feaster will report directly to Burke, who will oversee the team.

Feaster may feel the heat of having Burke as his boss, but Burke said Thursday that he will not be the general manager.

"I'm not the general manager of the Calgary Flames. Jay Feaster is," Burke said. "He is going to be in charge but with my guidance."

The Flames are in rebuilding situation after missing the playoffs for a fourth straight season.

Burke was fired as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs in January. He had previously been the general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks and Hartford Whalers.

He won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007.
