Five students slashed in Queens charter school cafeteria fight

Five students at a Queens charter school were injured and arrested Wednesday after a large fight broke out in the cafeteria, police said.

Police responded to a 911 call around 12:43 p.m. at New Dawn Charter High School II in Jamaica. Two of the students were taken to LIJ Cohen Children’s Hospital and Jamaica Hospital.

The students, ages 16 to 19, sustained minor injuries to the finger, shoulder and face. A security guard, 59, was slashed in the right arm, police said.

New Dawn Charter Schools provide over-aged and under-credited students 15 to 21 years old, including those learning English and with disabilities, the chance to return to school and get a high school diploma, according to the school mission statement.

Representatives for the school did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
