Five people injured in Monday New Iberia shooting

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — New Iberia police reported five people were injured in a shooting on Monday resulting from an illegal gambling operation.

According to the New Iberia Police Department, an officer was in the area of the 600 block of Breaux Alley when they heard several gunshots. Upon investigating the shooting, the officer discovered five people with injuries ranging from minor to severe. The victims were treated on the scene by first responders and taken to a local hospital.

Officials said an investigation determined that several people were engaged in illegal gambling and narcotics distribution when an armed group of individuals approached the home and opened fire. At least one person from the home returned fire at the ambushers, hitting at least one.

A search warrant was executed on the property, where four pounds of suspected marijuana and a firearm were located, according to authorities. New Iberia Chief of Police Todd D’Albor said detectives are working to piece together the facts of the case and identify all individuals involved. Arrest warrants will be issued soon.

Residents in New Iberia were vocal about their fears of safety following this shooting Monday night. News 10 had previously attempted to confirm information in regards to this shooting with the New Iberia Police Department, but was unable to confirm details until Friday.
