5 Former Dodgers and how they are faring this year:

*Justin Turner (Red Sox): Hitting .284 with 2 home runs.

*Cody Bellinger (Cubs):  After hitting .165 and .210 in his last two years in Los Angeles, he’s bounced back nicely and is hitting .300 with the Cubs – and has three homers against his former teammates.

*Corey Seager (Rangers): Hit .359 in first 11 games of season before going on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

*Trea Turner (Phillies):  Solid, but not spectacular; hitting .293 with only seven RBIs.

*Kenley Jansen (Red Sox): Has not given up a run in seven games with five saves.

The 5 lowest drafted players to make it to the Hall of Fame:

*Nolan Ryan, 12th round, 1965

*Jim Thome, 13th round, 1989

*Ryne Sandberg, 20th round, 1978

*John Smoltz, 22nd round, 1985

*Mike Piazza, 62nd round, 1988

5 Things you likely do not know about Arky Vaughan, the least known superstar in history and a Hall of Famer with the Pirates:

*Only Honus Wagner had a higher career batting average among shortstops than Vaughan’s .318.

*He led the league in walks three times and triples three times.  His career walks to strikeouts totals were 937-216.

*He made nine straight All-Star teams and hit over .300 for 10 consecutive years.

*He roomed with the great Wagner for nine years after Honus became a coach for the Pirates.

*He is one of three players from Fullerton to make it to the Hall of Fame.  The other two are Walter Johnson and Gary Carter. Vaughan died in a boating accident at age 40.

5 Great seasons by individuals, but their teams did not fare particularly well:

*Babe Ruth:  In 1920, the Babe hit more home runs (54) than all the other American League teams combined, still the Yankees finished in third place.

*Rogers Hornsby: In 1924, he hit .424, a major league record, but the Cardinals finished in seventh place (out of eight teams) with a 65-89 record.

*Cal Ripken Jr.: In his record-setting season of 1995, the Orioles were a third-place team with a 71-73 record.

*Sammy Sosa: Hit 63 home runs and drove in 141 in 2000, but the Cubs were a horrible 67-95.

*Mike Trout: Won his third MVP award in 2019 with 45 homers, yet the Angels were a rather pedestrian 80-82.
