Here are five easy ways to combat the appearance of enlarged pores

A common question I often get from my dermatology patients is, “How can I shrink my pores?” While true pore size cannot be changed, there are ways to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. Here are my five top tips to minimize the appearance of pores and get a smoother, clearer complexion.

1. Clear debris from clogged pores

Clogged pores become more noticeable than clear pores because dirt and bacteria become trapped inside, causing inflammation and often whiteheads or blackheads. Salicylic acid is an anti-inflammatory ingredient that works well to cleanse clogged pores and reduce redness and swelling.

2. Decrease sebaceous gland function

Sebaceous glands produce sebum, or oil, which plays an important role in your skin’s health. However, when too much sebum is produced, it can trap dirt and bacteria inside pores. Topical retinoids, botulinum toxin injections and testosterone blockers can all decrease sebaceous gland function to reduce excess sebum production and keep pores clear.

3. Increase water retention in the skin surrounding pores

Increasing the amount of water in the skin that surrounds the pores will help to make pores appear smaller. Humectant ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw moisture into the skin.

Injectable fillers like Skinvive® can also temporarily thicken pore walls, making the pore itself look smaller.

4. Splash your face with cold water

Splashing your face with cold water works to make pores appear smaller by decreasing blood flow and shrinking tissue. This effect will be temporary, however.

5. Schedule an in-office treatment

See your dermatologist for in-office treatments like extractions or a HydraFacial, which can both physically remove trapped debris from pores, while HydraFacial also adds a boost of hydration to make pores appear smaller.

Skin-tightening procedures that use heat can improve the appearance of large pores by stimulating collagen and tightening tissue.

In summary

Following the tips listed above can help to make enlarged pores appear smaller and less noticeable. It is also important to note that using the wrong skincare products for your Baumann Skin Type can clog pores, making them appear larger and more noticeable. So if you are having trouble with whiteheads or blackheads – two types of clogged pores – make sure you know your skin type and are customizing your skincare regimen to match your skin’s unique needs.
