Five celebrities we'd like to see join Pierre McGuire between the benches

During NBC’s Wednesday Night Rivalry, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers battled it out in a Metropolitan division showdown. What made the NBC broadcast different was that Susan Sarandon joined Pierre McGuire ‘Inside the Glass.’ After the Rangers first good chance, viewers of the broadcast realized they were in for a long night.

Sarandon’s often empty commentary and strings of “Oh’s” made for a poor viewer experience. Perhaps the most unsettling part of the broadcast was when McGuire asked her to compare Mark Messier and Kevin Costner. She dubbed them both as “sexy” and “leaders,” in case you wanted to know.

Although the Sarandon episode failed, it is fair to wonder which celebrities would thrive ‘Inside the Glass?’

Carrie Underwood

Having Carrie Underwood provide commentary on a Nashville Predators game could be a great opportunity. For starters, the country music superstar has been in a relationship with her now husband Mike Fisher since 2009. Their relationship would, in theory, allow Underwood to have very exclusive access and information on players and teams from around the league. The star also has many links to sports on her own, including a deal with NBC already as she sings the Sunday Night Football opening theme song.

If Underwood can commentate at a similar level to how she performed the national anthem during last year’s Stanley Cup finals, it could be a match made in heaven.

Vince Vaughn

One may be hard pressed to find a celebrity who has a bigger love affair than the one Vince Vaughan possess with the Chicago Blackhawks. The comedy actor has been deeply rooted in the sport whether it be showing his skills in NHLPA Hockey ’93 with Jeremy Roenick in Swingers or rocking a Hawks sweater in the movie The Dilemma. Vaughn has made his love for the sport known and could be a candidate to appear with McGuire.

Plus, he already has this interview with Jonathan Toews to add to his demo reel.

Michael Buble

The Canadian pop and soul singer has fully embraced his passion for hockey to the extent of owning his own hockey team. Buble is a co-owner of the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants, the junior team local to his hometown of Burnaby, B.C. Buble has professed his love for the Canucks, and his knowledge of the ownership position could be a asset.

Michael Buble has also laced up the skates and practiced with the Vancouver Canucks. Could this give him an advantage in the broadcast booth? Probably not, but it is still pretty cool.

Alyssa Milano

The famed actress, Milano has a great knowledge of the sport, specifically of her favourite team the Los Angeles Kings. The silver screen star is a season ticket holder who keeps a close eye on the Kings. During the 2015 NHL playoffs, the award-winning activist took over the team’s twitter account for game three of the Western Conference finals when the Kings battled the Coyotes. Having Milano appear on a Kings broadcast could be an experiment worth trying.

Riddick Bowe

The two-time Heavyweight Champion was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, but that has not prevented him from becoming a die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Bowe fell in love with the Leafs in 1993 after they fell to the LA Kings in seven games. The accomplished boxer also knows a thing or two about good managerial decisions.

The Olympic silver medalist’s Maple Leafs fandom and hockey business acumen could make him a fit to appear Inside the Glass. However, Pierre McGuire on occasion has been known to stick his foot in his own mouth. If McGuire says something that rubs Bowe the wrong way, he may earn himself ‘one punch between the eyes,’ from the world-renowned boxer.
