FIU student who visited the school’s law library tests positive for COVID-19

A Florida International University student has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the school confirmed Tuesday night.

The unidentified student was last on campus at FIU’s Law Library March 7. The College of Law’s library is located inside Rafael Diaz-Balart Hall, 11200 SW Eighth St., which is part of the university’s main campus.

The library remained opened until March 15.

“Out of an abundance of caution and based on the fact that 17 days have passed since the student was on campus, it is unlikely that other members of the university community were exposed,” the university said in a news release. “The student was tested off campus and self-reported results to the student’s dean.”

Last week, the head of the university’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry wrote in an email saying a student who worked in a “chemistry and biochemistry stockroom” recently tested positive for coronavirus. The university later said that student tested negative.

Also last week, the school announced that a staff member, who had been traveling and had not been recently on campus, had tested positive for COVID-19.

The school urged anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 including a dry cough and fever to seek medical attention.

FIU Health and the Student Health Clinics are seeing patients by appointment only.
