The First New Toyota Supra Will Be Auctioned Off for Charity
Want to be very first person to own a new Supra? Well, it's not going to be as easy as getting your deposit down early at your local Toyota dealer. The company is auctioning off the very first 2020 Supra for charity at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale event next month after the car is revealed in Detroit. Better reserve an auction number now.
The first Supra won't be a standard production example, either. It'll have a matte gray exterior with red mirror caps (teased in the Toyota-provided photo below), along with a red leather interior and a carbon fiber interior badge asserting its status as the very first 2020 Supra. Toyota hasn't revealed whether this car will be a four- or six-cylinder model, but considering the Supra nameplate's inline-six heritage, we're betting it'll be equipped with the latter engine choice.
The car will be auctioned with Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 19th, 2019-just five days after the car's reveal at the Detroit Auto Show on the 14th (which, if you're counting, is just over a month away). All proceeds will go to the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which helps post-9/11 veterans, services members, and their families.
Manufacturers do this sort of stuff all the time with popular cars. The first 2017 Acura NSX sold for $1.3 million, while the first 2018 Bullitt Mustang went for $300,000-both at charity auctions. It's safe to say the new Supra will pull in some big cash regardless of its MSRP (which has yet to be announced).
