In a first, Okhla compost plant gets carbon credits worth Rs.25 lakh

New Delhi, March 6 -- The Okhla composting plant of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has received carbon credits and Rs.25 lakh from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for helping the environment. The plant uses 200 tonnes of municipal waste to produce manure that can be used in parks and gardens. Municipal commissioner Manish Gupta said the plant operates under Public Private Partnership with IL&FS and is the first plant in the country to receive such credits. "The plant recycles the municipal waste which in turn eases pressure on the landfill site," he said. Since 2007, the plant has converted two lakh tonnes of municipal waste into manure through 'aerobic composting technology'.
