First look: 'Supergirl' heads to Superman's Fortress of Solitude

Supergirl is about to step into the hallowed halls of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.

In the Feb. 29 episode, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) heads to Superman’s icy headquarters in an effort to learn how to defeat Indigo (Laura Vandervoort). (More scoop on that here.)

“Seeing the Fortress is something I wanted to do since the beginning of the show,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says. “What’s really fun about it is it’s almost an amalgamation of every Fortress that’s ever been seen. There are bits of it that are right out of the comics, like the key to let you in, and we have Kelex, the Kryptonian robot in the tomb. Then there’s other parts that echo the [Richard] Donner version as well, and there’s other stuff that’s brand new. That was really fun to be able to do.”

“It was really exciting to see those small touches,” adds executive producer Ali Adler, who likens the Fortress to a Virginia Woolf essay. “It really is the ultimate Room of One’s Own - he builds this amazing place of solitude. I brought [The Big Bang Theorys] Bill Prady to the set, and he was just blown away by this moment where Supergirl is walking through the Fortress.

Describing the Fortress as “magical,” Benoist praises the show’s rare but poignant inclusion of the Man of Steel. “It’s fun how we flirt with the idea of Superman being part of this world - how it is Kara’s story, but they are still family,” she says. “I love the way that they’ve included him in Kara’s story with the messaging and things like that. This was the pinnacle of that. When we walked in and did that scene, it felt pretty epic.”

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
