First look at new high school planned in Cordova

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Documents submitted to county officials last Friday provide the first look at a new high school planned for Cordova.

Plans for the New East Region High School show two buildings with about 440,000 total square feet of space, plus lighted ball fields and a track and stadium, on more than 40 acres just west of North Germantown Parkway, between Trinity Road and Fischer Steel Road.

The new Memphis-Shelby County district school would serve more than 2,000 students currently zoned to Germantown High School, according to the application. (See drawings and maps below.)

Memphis-Shelby County Schools’ request for approval of a planned development will be considered by the Shelby County Land Use Control Board at its June 13 meeting.

MSCS plans to purchase the land after approval of the plan by the LUCB, the application states.

The cost of that purchase was not addressed in the application, but a report from February 2023 stated the tract was being sold to the district for $3.5 million, at the time. Reporting from 2022 stated the estimated cost for the new school at that time was $100 million.

Deal would transfer 3G schools, build new Cordova high school

Plans for a new school in Cordova have been in the works for at least two years, since a deal was reached to transfer the so-called “3G schools” from MSCS control to Germantown, and build a new county school in Cordova.
