First chair for the weekend – Steamboat Ski Resort

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) – Steamboat Ski Resort boasts the most snow in Colorado for the ski season through March 8.

“We’re almost at 330 inches and it’s obviously still snowing” said Loryn Duke, communications director, in a Friday morning interview with Matt Meister, chief meteorologist. “We feel like it has snowed every day in March.”

A base of 122 inches is near the resort’s base at this time in 2023, which was a record season of snow at Colorado’s northernmost ski area.

“We call it champagne powder because it is so light and fluffy,” said Duke, “and it has one of the lowest water concentrations in Colorado, and even in Utah.”

“The trees are amazing,” Duke said about the resort’s renowned access to Aspen groves and runs through evergreens. “What’s unique about Steamboat is that we have really accessible trees. Some people say we made a deal with the devil in order to get our trees so perfectly placed.”

Duke said Steamboat is different from other ski locations because it’s a true western town with a cowboy culture.

“It’s part of our roots,” said Duke. “It’s part of our heritage, so you’ll very likely see cowboys skiing down the mountain and cowgirls saddled up at the bar.”

“They probably aren’t just wearing a cowboy hat,” she said, “they probably literally just came off the ranch earlier in the day.”
