Sunday April 14, 2024
THE FIRST OFFICIAL 80-DEGREE TEMP OF 2024 HAS JUST BEEN REPORTED. Temps in Chicago hit 80° here on the 2 pm CDT O’Hare observation…It’s the city’s first 80-degree temp in the more than 6 months since Oct. 24 last fall when the official high temp here hit 83. “Normal DAILY highs” don’t typically (and regularly) reach 80 until June 12-14.
To put today’s April 14th 80-degree reading in further historical context—over the full 153-year term of weather records here in Chicago, the average date of the first 80° has been on or about April 26th—and in JUST THE MOST RECENT 30 YEARS, the average date of the first 80° has occurred on or about April 19th.
SO TODAY’S 80-degree TEMP comes 5 days earlier than the most recent 30-year average
NOTE: The Climate Central plot of average spring temps since the early 1970s. Chicago’s spring temps have increased an average of 1.3-degrees.
And, Meteorological Spring 2024 temps (covering the readings since March 1) rank 12th warmest of the past 153 years running 4.2-degrees above normal.
