Firefighters serve Lima community on Christmas

Dec. 25—LIMA — The holiday season is full of laughter and cheer for many people who are gathered with close family. For others, they are still called to work because of their essential duties. The Lima Fire Department gathered Monday evening to celebrate Christmas at the fire station.

"We have a meal together," Captain Dale Schultheis said. "Usually, guys come in early and start making food. They will cook all day and we usually have a meal in the evening."

According to Schultheis, holiday calls are "steady."

"There are not a lot of people out, but we probably get the same number of calls," Schultheis said.

The B-Shift spent their evening grilling and preparing dinner with their fellow firefighters. The families of the firefighters do not usually spend dinner at the station, but this year some brought cookies and other goods.

Since the department continues to serve the community on busy holidays, the firefighters find creative ways to spend time with their families. Schultheis also said some families celebrate Christmas on a different day. Working on the actual day can be rewarding, yet hard for the firefighters.

"It can be kind of hard on some of the younger guys who have little kids, when they have to be here," Schultheis said. "They will try to celebrate it (the holidays) at other times. Some other guys will also come and work for some of the younger guys (so they can be with their children)."

He also said although time away from family is difficult, the firefighters continue to take care of the community the best way they can.
