Firefighter and family pet treated at scene of fire in Mifflin Township; home damaged

A firefighter suffered minor injuries and a pet was given oxygen for smoke inhalation when a fire broke out in a home in Mifflin Township.

The fire along North Carolina Avenue was called in at 9:50 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters arrived on scene and saw heavy smoke coming from the structure. They entered through a back door and saw flames at the rear of the house on the ground level that were making their way up to the second story, according to fire Chief J.J. Bittinger.

"But we managed to get it knocked down very quickly," he said in a news release, noting all occupants of the home made it out safely.

Bittinger said the fire remains under investigation, but it appeared "to be an electrical fire of some sort."

A firefighter was check out at the scene for non-life threatening injuries, he said, noting a family pet was rescued and given oxygen for smoke inhalation.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family in finding shelter.

Ohio Edison was called to shut off power to the home.

Mutual aid was provided by Hayesville, Perrysville, Lucas-Monroe and Mifflin-Richland fire and EMS departments and the Ashland County Sheriff's Office.
