Firearm found in vehicle at Opelika High School parking lot, student arrested

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – An Opelika High School student is under arrest after police allege he brought a gun onto school property.

Wednesday, April 17th, police responded to a report of a potential firearm inside a vehicle parked at the school along Lafayette Parkway.  18-year-old Dezi Yelder os now facing allegations on charges of Possession of a Firearm in Certain Places and Possession of Marijuana, Second Degree.

According to Opelika Police School Resource Officers, they received information suggesting the presence of a firearm in a vehicle within the school’s parking lot. Sgt. Jonathon Glover, alongside his firearm detection canine, Gunner, conducted an open-air search, during which Gunner alerted to a Honda parked in the lot. Subsequently, officers performed a probable cause search, discovering a firearm in plain view within the vehicle.

Despite the concerning discovery, school leaders say there was no active threat to the students or staff at Opelika High School, and everyone on campus remains safe.
