Fire in two buildings on Carter Street in Newburgh leaves 24 homeless

CITY OF NEWBURGH - A fire in two buildings on Carter Street late Monday night left 24 people homeless.

It was the second fire in the city in just over a week to displace two dozen or more residents.

A fire on Lutheran Street on the night of Easter Sunday displaced 33 residents. That fire damaged three buildings, including one that apparently was abandoned.

The first firefighters on the scene shortly after the first alarm was sounded at 11:18 p.m. Monday found the rear sides of 59 and 61 Carter St. fully engulfed in flames.

A second alarm was sounded and an additional pumper and ladder truck from the city responded to the scene.

Mutual aid firefighters from the Cronomer Valley, Stewart Air Guard, West Point, Castle Point, Coldenham and Cornwall-on-Hudson fire departments in neighboring communities responded to assist city firefighters in battling the blaze.

The fire was under control just before 2 a.m., but firefighters remained on the scene until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The Red Cross responded and assisted the 24 people displaced by the fire with finding temporary lodging.

One city firefighter and one resident suffered minor injuries and were taken by Empress Emergency Medical Services to the emergency room at nearby Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious at this time, according to city fire officials.
