Fire in southern Vigo busts through apartment building roof, but no one hurt

May 19—Multiple agencies responded to a two-story, four-unit apartment fire about 9 p.m. Sunday at Cobblestone Apartments in southern Vigo County.

No one was injured, and the fire in the 1900 block of Cobblestone Way was under control by about 10 p.m., said Chief Tom High of the Honey Creek Fire Department.

The residents of four apartments were displaced and the Red Cross was contacted; it was not immediately known how many residents were affected.

The cause is under investigation, High said, and the State Fire Marshal's office has been called to assist. The Honey Creek Fire department is leading the investigation.

Crews arriving on scene attempted an offensive attack, High said, but the fire was on the second floor and proceeded into the attic.

'We pulled everybody out and went defensive," High said. "It was through the roof very shortly after we got here."

Several agencies assisted, including fire departments from Terre Haute, Riley, Sugar Creek, Seelyville and Prairieton. Also assisting were Vigo County Sheriff's Office and Trans Care.

As of 10:30 p.m., multiple units were still on scene and many residents of Cobblestone were outside watching.

One woman said she had lost everything in the fire.
