MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A fire broke out Wednesday at the Midtown home of U.S. Congressman Steve Cohen.

Fire crews responded to Kenilworth Place at 3:05. Cohen was not inside the home at the time, and no injuries were reported, the Memphis Fire Department said.

However, three vehicles in a garage attached to the house were a total loss.

Cohen spoke with reporters outside his home, saying he had just landed in Memphis after working in Washington. A neighbor called the fire department, he said, while a friend nearby called him to tell him his house was on fire.

“Not a good way to come home,” said the longtime Democratic representative. “Almost worth staying up there, being with some of those crazy Republicans.”

Cohen said the cars were a 2010 Audi, a 1976 Peugot and a 1986 Alfa Romeo.

“They’re toast,” he said, adding that he loves his cars, but was grateful the fire didn’t spread further into his home and that neighbors and friends were looking out for him.

Investigators on the scene are determining the cause of the fire. Cohen said they believe it was an accidental electrical fire.
