Fire hydrant testing to begin in Springfield through summer

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Fire hydrant testing in Springfield will begin on Monday. Tests are set to take place each weekday through July 31.

They will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The Springfield Fire Department and City Water Light & Power (CWLP) conduct hydrant tests yearly to ensure they are functional in the event of fire emergencies.

Officials with CWLP said to expect discolored water in homes and businesses near tested hydrants. This should only last around five minutes. To flush the discoloration, officials suggest running tap water on cold until the water turns clear.

They also advised delaying laundry until the water is no longer discolored.

To find out hydrant testing locations, call the Springfield Fire Department at 217-788-8474. If you’re a CWLP customer and water discoloration is continuing past hydrant testing, or you have other questions regarding water quality, call Water Dispatch at 217-789-2323 ext. 2.
