Fire erupts in vacant National City motel, the Stardust Inn

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KSUI) — A fire broke out at a vacant National City motel early Tuesday morning, according to the National City Fire Department.

The fire broke out just before 5:30 a.m. at the Stardust Inn at 1700 Plaza Blvd. The flames were reported specifically in the office area at the front of the property — the same space at the hotel that caught fire a week ago, according to National City Fire Battalion Chief Robert Hernandez.

Light smoke could be seen billowing from the motel. Fire crews, including support from Chula Vista Fire and San Diego Fire-Rescue, are still on scene as of 6 a.m. working to extinguish the blaze.

No injuries have been reported to civilians or fire personnel at this time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Hernandez said it was likely ignited by a squatter on the property. According to the Battalion Chief, the Stardust Inn has had frequent problems with unhoused people living in the motel since it was shuttered.
