$1,000 reward for capture of Geneva Co. firebug
DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — A possible arson in rural Geneva County destroyed a bridge over the weekend, possibly causing many problems for the county in the near future.
The Geneva County District Attorney’s Office is offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information on the fire.
According to the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to L Vaughan Road from County Roads 42 and 99 early Sunday morning and found a burning timber bridge over a creek.
Geneva Firefighters attempted to stop the blaze but could not contain the flames before the fire consumed most of the bridge.
Sheriff Tony Helms tells WDHN that deputies believe the fire was started late Saturday, and they are investigating it as an arson.
The Geneva County Sheriff’s Office asks that anyone with information on the arson contact them at (334) 684-5660.
During Monday morning’s Geneva County Commission meeting, commissioners and county leaders discussed how the bridge’s destruction could impact the county economically.
Sheriff Helms says the Geneva County Road and Bridge Department does not have enough funds set aside to repair the bridge, so the money has been taken from another department.
With the bridge being out, travel on L Vaughan Road must be diverted, causing significant delays in school buses and farming routes and blocking the way for citizens who live on that road.
