Fire damages law office in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A fire started early Saturday morning in Scranton just about half a mile from where the Armed Forces parade is supposed to start.

Lackawanna County Center for Public Safety said that a call came in just before 8:00 a.m. for a second alarm fire on the 100 block of Franklin Street in Scranton.

No one was inside the Wylam and Georgetti law office at the time according to officials.

Chief John Judge of the Scranton Fire Department said that the fire had a good head start on the first responders which forced crews to go into more of a defensive fight.

“The incident commander at the time made the decision to go with a defensive operation, to just be from the exterior of the building and use large amounts of water to hopefully hold the fire at bay and attempt to extinguish it,” stated Chief Judge.

Smoke also limited visibility on the inside so the incident commander made the decision to fight the fire solely from the exterior, according to the chief.

Damage to the building is still being assessed, according to Chief Judge.

A city fire inspector is looking for the cause and origin of the downtown Scranton fire.
