Fire crews douse barn fire in Durham before it could destroy attached home
May 11—DURHAM — Some 10 fire departments were deployed to Royalsborough Road on Friday evening for a barn fire which nearly destroyed an attached residence.
Durham Fire and Rescue issued a news release early Saturday morning sharing that crews were dispatched to 1355 Royalsborough Road in Durham around 7:03 p.m.
All occupants and pets made it safely out of the blaze, which crews were able to stop before it reached the main residence, the statement said. The house will most likely be habitable.
One firefighter was transported with injuries to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, but was discharged shortly afterward.
The statement said several factors played into crews' ability to prevent further damage from the fire, the first being that an ambulance returning from a call was able to respond immediately with two firefighters.
"Second was the close proximity of a water supply, reducing the number of tankers required to supply necessary water for firefighting operations," the statement said. "Finally, as is often the case, the quick response of our mutual aid partners played a huge role in the outcome."
Assisting Durham Fire and Rescue were United Ambulance Service, Lisbon Emergency and departments from Auburn, Brunswick, Freeport, Lewiston, Lisbon, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Pownal and Yarmouth
