Fire Chief Thornton graduates from Executive Fire Officer Program

May 23—Decatur Fire Chief Tracy Thornton has become one of fewer than 5,000 graduates who have completed the Executive Fire Officer Program.

This program is a flagship program offered through the National Fire Academy and the United States Fire Administration, according to Decatur Fire and Rescue. Since the program's inception in 1987, only 70 graduates have come from Alabama.

Thornton has been the city of Decatur's fire chief since October 2020.

The program looks to supplement existing training programs that are already available. The goal is to support the needs of fire and emergency service agencies in preparing to meet the constantly changing demands of the communities these graduates serve, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
