Fire at Carmichael medical office building prompts evacuation, Sacramento Metro Fire says

Authorities on Thursday afternoon evacuated dozens of people due to an apparent equipment fire on the third floor of the St. George Medical Center building in Carmichael.

The fire was reported shortly after 4:30 p.m. at the medical office building at 6620 Coyle Avenue, just west of Dewey Drive.

The first firefighters who arrived found heavy smoke on the third floor, which created limited visibility, said Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, a spokesman for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

He said they called for a second-alarm response to get enough firefighters to help evacuate about 60 to 100 people from the medical building as other firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters put out the fire quickly and kept flames from reaching the other floors in the four-story building, Wilbourn said. The firefighters isolated the fire to a piece of burning equipment. He said the fourth floor sustained some smoke damage. No injuries were reported.
